Adventure Presents: Using the Magazine

You might already have your first issue of Adventure Presents, or you may just be curious about how the magazine works. Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Each issue of Adventure Presents is designed to be pulled apart into different sections for you to use during the game. Some of these are for the GM’s eyes only, some are for the players, so it’s a good idea to make sure that whoever is going to be running the Adventure is the one who does this.

For the purposes of the rest of this article, we’ll assume that you are going to be the GM!

How to Use the Magazine

The first thing you need to do is separate out the different sections. Each issue includes instructions on how to do this on the first page, but the general rule is you open it up to the middle page and then remove each section until you are left with the Adventure booklet as well as all booklets needed to play the game. Some of these will be given to the players at the start of the game, the rest you will be keeping for yourself.

Before diving into the game, you should read all the materials – in particular the How to Play, Special Rules, and Adventure booklets – to familiarize yourself with all the rules and plot points for the Adventure. This will make things run much more smoothly when the Adventure begins!

At the start of the first session, the players each choose which Protagonist they would like to play from the Adventure’s character sheets and give their Protagonist a name. Make sure that everyone understands the rules given in the How to Play booklet, either by explaining them aloud or by sharing the booklet around the group.

The rules can be downloaded from our Resources page, so you could send these to the players ahead of your first session if you wish.

During play, your players should only have access to their character sheets, the How to Play booklet, and any map handouts you decide to share with them. Keep everything else secret!

Each issue of Adventure Presents is different, but the basic format remains the same. Make sure you read the first page of the magazine for a more detailed look at how you should use that specific issue!
