Adventure Presents: The Character Sheet
So you’re getting ready to play your first game in the Adventure series and want to know what you need to do to prepare?
Well, good news! All you need to do is read through your character sheet, which your GM might send to you in advance or might leave you to choose at the start of your session.
The general layout of the character sheets are the same in every issue of Adventure Presents, although the theming and tone will change to match the character and adventure you are on. Here’s a look at everything you’ll have on there.
Name
Your adventurer is going to need a name, which you can write directly on the sheet. If you’re struggling to come up with one, there are plenty of random name generators available online that can spit out some options for you!
Background
This will give a one-sentence overview of your character, plus a deeper look into their past and why they find themselves on this adventure. This could give you some ideas for how your character might react to certain situations or encounters that come up.
It might indicate that your character would be more inclined to distrust certain people, or that some things they come across might evoke a specific response from them.
If there are things about your background that you aren’t too keen on you can decide not to lean into that part of your character’s story, or you could even speak to the GM about tweaking it to something that works better for you.
Abilities
These represent your aptitude for certain types of actions, with each Ability having a score between 1 and 4. The higher the number, the better you are at those actions, which will immediately indicate where your strengths and weaknesses lie.
Your Health and Resolve are also included here – Health shows how much Damage you can take before you fall unconscious, and Resolve represents your willpower, a resource you can use to improve your Abilities.
Drives
Your Drives represent your goals, needs, and habits, and taking actions that relate to these will improve your Resolve. Along with your background, your Drives are designed to encourage you to get into character, so keep them in mind when you are deciding how you approach different challenges.
At the end of each chapter of the adventure your character’s outlook on life might have changed, which can be reflected by adding, adjusting, or replacing some of their Drives
Gear
Each character starts the game with Gear, indicating what interesting items they are starting the adventure with. Some can be used at will, while other pieces require a dice roll when it’s used. Any requirements for using this Gear are listed in its description.
You’ll also find that some pieces of Gear have a limited number of uses, which means any time you use them you have to mark off one of the boxes underneath the description. Better be sure to make it count!
Throughout the adventure you can gain and lose Gear – when this happens be sure to update your character sheet.
Notes
We’ve included a space for notes on your character sheet, so you can keep track of important events, interactions, or anything else that you don’t want to forget as the adventure continues!
That is everything you’ll find on your character sheet. Good luck on your Adventure!
